If you’ve ever spent a day in an EYFS classroom, you’ll know that children never really stop communicating, even when they’re not speaking.
A raised eyebrow, a shared giggle, a quiet moment of concentration… it all tells a story.
Communication and Language is one of the three prime areas of the EYFS, and for good reason. It underpins everything else. Children learn through talk: by listening, sharing, retelling, wondering, and experimenting with language. Every conversation (and every silence) shapes how they think and learn.
But effective communication support doesn’t just happen. It’s a skill that grows with awareness and reflection.
So, how can we help children flourish as communicators, especially in busy EYFS classrooms where time, space, and adult attention are stretched thin?
Be present- not just nearby
Children know when we’re really listening. It’s in the way we kneel down beside them, meet their eyes, and wait for their response. Being physically and emotionally present creates the safety children need to take risks with words- to share, imagine, and question.
Follow their lead
When we tune in to children’s play, we step into their world.
If they’re building a tower, join in with curiosity- “You’re balancing the blocks so carefully; I wonder how high it can go?”
These shared moments create natural opportunities for vocabulary growth and genuine back-and-forth conversation.
Model, expand, and reframe
Children learn language by hearing how it sounds when it’s just a little beyond their reach.
When a child says, “Him goed to park,” we can gently model it back: “Yes, he went to the park — what did he play on?”
Or if a child offers one-word responses, we can expand: “Truck” → “Yes, the big red truck with shiny wheels.”
These small tweaks build understanding and confidence — without ever making a child feel wrong.
Talk less, listen more
It’s easy to feel pressure to fill every silence.
But some of the richest communication comes from waiting- giving children time to process, respond, and find their own words. Silence can be powerful.
