Learning in the Little Things: Unlocking Everyday Magic in EYFS

Learning in the Little Things: Unlocking Everyday Magic in EYFS. A blog post by MrsG_EYFS.

Have you ever noticed how the simplest moments— a child stacking blocks, sharing a snack, or asking “why?”— can hold the seeds of powerful learning?

In early years education, it’s not just the big, planned activities that shape development. It’s the everyday interactions that spark curiosity, build confidence, and nurture lifelong skills. When we slow down and look closer, we discover that the magic of learning often hides in the smallest details.

So, what does this look like in practice? Let’s step into an average day in an early years classroom and explore how ordinary routines become extraordinary learning opportunities.

The Magic Starts at the Door

From the moment children walk through the door, learning begins. A simple “hello” or “good morning” models polite social interactions and opens the door to back-and- forth conversation. Next, children put away their coats and bags—recognising their names or pictures, using fine motor skills to hook coats on pegs, and manoeuvring lunchboxes out of bags. These seemingly small tasks are rich with opportunities for independence, problem-solving, and coordination.

Voting for Stories: Names and Inference Skills

As children enter the room, they find their name again to vote for the day’s story. This isn’t just name recognition—it’s an exercise in inference. Choosing a book based on its cover alone encourages prediction and reasoning. Simple conversations about their choices deepen understanding and language skills.

Routine Moments, Big Learning

Morning routines like talking about the date, days of the week (yes, complete with the Addams Family tune!), and the weather may seem ordinary, but they teach essential concepts. These aren’t part of a formal lesson plan—they’re woven into the rhythm of the day. Our timetable also sparks conversations about planned activities, giving insight into children’s prior knowledge and interests. These insights often shape the direction of learning later in the day.

Provision Time: Where Curiosity Leads

Spending time in provision with children is where the real magic happens. Play opens a window into their world—their interests, ideas, and feelings. Often, we follow their lead, diving into topics together. Whether it’s using Google, gathering books from the library, or inviting experts, these moments turn curiosity into collaborative learning. (And yes, I’ve learned more about dinosaurs than I ever imagined, thanks to EYFS!)

Everyday Moments Matter

When we embrace the little things, we unlock big opportunities. EYFS isn’t just about planned lessons—it’s about recognising that every interaction, every routine, and every conversation can spark learning. The magic is already there; we just need to notice it.

Bringing It All Together

The beauty of early years education lies in its simplicity. Every greeting, every routine, every playful exchange is a chance to nurture curiosity and confidence. When we recognise these moments as learning opportunities, we transform ordinary days into extraordinary experiences. It’s not about adding more to our plans—it’s about seeing the learning that’s already there and making the most of it.

So next time you watch a child hang up their coat or choose a story, pause and notice the skills they’re building. Because in the world of early years, the little things aren’t little at all—they’re the foundation for everything that comes next.
